Check whether the issue is related to the hardware components

  • The mechanisms of copying and scanning share the same hardware components.
  • So, check whether your printer can scan anything. If it fails to scan the documents, it indicates that the issue is with the printer’s hardware components.
  • In case your printer can scan the documents, it indicates that there is no problem with the hardware components. Instead, you need to check the cartridge system of your printer.

Check the cartridge system

  • When your printer prints an image, color ink can also be used to print a black image. However, this cannot happen while doing the copy function.
  • Because whenever you want to copy an image or a document, you would usually specify whether it is a Color or Black copy. For Color copies, only the color ink can be used and conversely, black ink alone can be used for Black copies.
  • So, if you had chosen the Black copy option when there is an issue with the black ink, your printer will not perform the copy function. As a result, you may start to think that your printer is encountering an issue when performing the copy function.

Print a Quality Diagnostic report

  • A Quality Diagnostic report can show you the condition of the cartridge system of your printer. Follow the instructions below to print the report.
  • Make sure that your HP printer is turned on and enough paper is there in the paper tray.
  • On your printer control panel, press the * and # keys simultaneously.
  • Press 1> 2> 7. Using the navigation keys, choose the Reports option and press the OK button.
  • Now choose the vpp self test option and press OK.
  • Your printer will print the Quality diagnostic report.

Review the report

  • As previously mentioned, you can check the issues with your printer’s cartridge system using the Quality diagnostic report.
  • Now, take that report and check the color blocks of each cartridge.
  • If you find that all the color blocks are perfect, it signifies that an issue is there with the hardware components of your printer.
  • In case you find any missing or faded color blocks in the report, it indicates an issue with your printer’s cartridge system.

Fix the cartridge system

  • Open the cartridge access door of your printer and take out all the ink cartridges.
  • Reinsert the cartridges into their slots and press each of them until they lock into their place.
  • If you find any damage to the ink cartridges, replace them immediately. It is always recommended to use original HP cartridges. So, in case you have installed any third-party ink cartridges on your printer, replace them with genuine HP cartridges.
  • Now, check whether your printer can copy the documents.

Power cycle your printer

  • Whatever the issue is, a simple power cycle can fix the problems. To do a power cycle on your HP OfficeJet 4655 printer, turn off your printer and disconnect its power cable from the power source and the printer’s rear port.
  • Leave your printer disconnected for a minute.
  • Reconnect the power cord to your printer and turn it on.
  • Now check whether the copy issue with your HP OfficeJet 4655 printer has come to an end.
