Steps to Reformat a Hard Drive

  1. Back up the photos and software product keys before reformatting.
  2. Download and install a free data destruction program.
  3. Follow the instructions to install the data destruction program.
  4. Burn the ISO image on a Compact drive or DVD.
  5. Run the data destruction program software.
  6. Check and confirm that your computer or laptop is plugged into a power source.
  7. Reformat all the data on your hard drive.
  8. Restart your system and then install the new OS to use.

  • Formatting a hard drive helps you to delete all the information from your driver and set up a file system (NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, HFS Plus). After you format your hard drive, you can install a new OS on your system so that the OS can read and write the data to the drive.
  • But formatting a hard drive does not wipe off all the data from your hard drive. Removed files can be recovered by using a recovery software or any special hardware. You need to reformat your hard drive to remove all the data permanently from your drive.
  • Reformatting a drive might take several minutes or hours based on the drive storage and the type of software/method that you used to wipe off. Before you start to reformat, back up all the files, photos, or any product keys of software. After reformatting, it cannot be recovered even with any special recovery software or hardware.
  • Check and confirm that all the files have been backed up. Download a free data destruction program from a reliable third party site. If you need to use DBAN, browse DBAN download page site on your computer. Download the DBAN program and save the DBAN ISO file to your computer.
  • Burn the DBAN file to a Compact Disc or a USB drive. Reboot your system and get into the DBAN disc or USB device. Use the function keys to select an option from the DBAN main menu shown on the screen. Press F1 key continue and then select the drives that need to be reformatted with the interactive mode. Wait until the DBAN erases all the data from the selected drive and then verify it.
  • If you are not using a DBAN program, install the downloaded free destruction program on your system. Start and complete the installation process of the destruction program. If you are reformatting a laptop hard drive, make sure that the computer is plugged into a power source.
  • Run the free destruction program to reformat all the data from your computer or laptop’s hard drive. Wait until the destruction program completely erases all the data.
  • When the reformatting process completes, restart your system and then insert the installation CD in your system’s disk drive. Install the new OS and create a new partition, restore your backed up files, photos, or software, and whatever you wish to do on your computer.
