  1. To erase the disk from where your Mac started, click Startup from macOS Recovery, or start from a different disk.

  3. Click View Show All Devices from the menu bar.
  4. On the sidebar in Disk Utility, select the volume to erase the disk.
  5. Select the Erase button or tab and then enter the following fields: Name, Format, and Scheme.

  7. After erasing, quit Disk Utility.
  8. You can also install the macOS on the disk if you want your Mac to start from there.

The Elaborate Steps to Format Hard Drive for Mac

  • The Disk Utility is used to format a drive irrespective of its type: Internal, External, hard drive, or an SSD. It supports various functions like involving one or more disks, volumes, or partition. While formatting the drive, it will erase the current data on the device. Make sure you have the backup of the data.
  • The steps to format the drive is often confused with erasing the volume. While deleting a volume, it just affects that volume and doesn’t destroy the complete information. To format the drive, install the Disk Utility. It is located in Applications/Utilities. Add the Disk utility app to the dock.
  • On the left-hand side of the pane, you can find a list of drives and volumes connected to your mac. From the list, select the drive you wish to format. The drive which you selected and the information regarding the drive will be displayed, along with a partition map, capacity status, and S.M.A.R.T. Status.
  • On the top of the Disk Utility option, click the Erase button or select Erase from the Edit menu.
  • You will get a pop-up or a warning text that erasing the selected drive will destroy all the data on the drive. It will enable you to name the new volume you create and also the format type and partition map. Select the format field from the list: OS X Extended (Journaled), OS X Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled), OS X Extended (Journaled, Encrypted), OS X Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled, Encrypted), MS-DOS(FAT), and ExFat.
  • OS X extended is the most common choice than other options which are used in a specific situation. In the Erase section, use the drop-down Scheme field to choose the partition map type: GUID Partition Map, Master Boot Record, and Apple Partition Map. GUID Partition Map is the default option and applicable for all the Mac systems using internal processors.
  • Click the Erase button on the Erase panel after you have chosen all the selections. Disk Utility erases and formats the selected drive. Finally, click the Done button to format the drive using Disk Utility.
