Importing a VPN Settings File

You can perform any one of the following on your Mac computer

  • Double-click the VPN settings file.
  • Go to Network Preferences.
  • Now, import the settings automatically.

Else,

  • Click the Apple menu. Go to System Preferences.
  • Click the Network option.
  • Choose the Action pop-up menu.
  • Select the Import Configurations option.
  • Now, choose the VPN settings file.
  • Finally, click the Import option (or button).

Entering the VPN Settings Manually

  • Select the Apple menu on your Mac computer. Go to System Preferences.
  • Click the Network option.
  • In the list on your left, click the Add button (+).
  • Now, choose the Interface pop-up menu.
  • Select VPN. Click the VPN Type pop-up menu.
  • Based on the network to which you are connecting, select the type of VPN connection you wish to set up.
  • Provide a name to the VPN service.
  • Click the Create button.
  • L2TP: This is an extension of the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. This protocol is usually used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to enable a VPN over the Internet.
  • IPSec (Internet Protocol Security): This is a set of security protocols.
  • IKEv2: This is a protocol that sets up a security association in IPSec.
  • For the VPN connection, type the server address.
  • Enter the account name. Select Authentication Settings.
  • Now, enter the information that you have obtained from your network administrator.
  • Click the Advanced option (in case your network administrator has asked you to) so that you can enter more information like session options, DNS servers, TCP/IP settings, and proxies.
  • These additional information depend on the kind of VPN connection that you are setting up.
  • Click the Apply button.
  • Click the OK button.

To make use of the VPN status icon for connecting to the network and switching between VPN services, choose the Show VPN status in menu bar option. In order to remove the VPN configuration,

  • Choose the VPN network connection service from the list.
  • Click the Remove button.
