How to Fix Touchpad Not Working On Macbook?

CHECK THE SYSTEM PREFERENCES: MACBOOK

  • First, select the Apple logo at the top-left corner of the MacBook window.
  • Choose the System Preferences option from the drop-down list.
  • Now, select the Software Update option.
  • If any updates are shown, click on the Update Now button.
  • It will also update your MacBook’s firmware, which may solve the touchpad issues.
  • On completing the update, check if the touchpad is working properly on your MacBook.
  • If the touchpad problem is not resolved, disable force click on your MacBook by following the next troubleshooting method.

DISABLE FORCE CLICK ON MACBOOK

  • On your MacBook’s main screen, click the Apple icon at the top-left corner.
  • Here, choose the System Preferences option from the drop-down list.
  • Click on the Trackpad option from the list.
  • In the Point & Click tab, deselect the Force Click and haptic feedback checkbox.
  • Now, check if the issue is solved.
  • If it does not work, reset the touchpad by following the below instructions.

RESET THE TOUCHPAD

  • Click the Go option at the top-left corner of the MacBook window.
  • Select the Go to Folder option from the drop-down list.
  • Now, you will see the Go to Folder dialog box.
  • Type the below path into the respective field and click the Go button.
  • “/Library/Preferences/”
  • In the Finder window, navigate to the following files:
  • “com.apple.AppleMultitouchTrackpad.plist”
  • “com.apple.preference.trackpad.plist”
  • If you see either of these files, delete it.
  • Next, restart your MacBook and check if the touchpad is working properly.
  • In case the issue continues, reset PRAM or NVRAM on your MacBook by following the below steps.

RESET PRAM OR NVRAM

  • First, you need to click the Apple icon at the top-left corner of the MacBook screen.
  • Click the Shut Down option from the drop-down list.
  • Now, turn on your MacBook.
  • Immediately, hit and hold the Option, Command, P, and R keys together on your keyboard after turning on your device.
  • Hold the keys together until your MacBook restarts or until you see the Apple logo on the screen. This process will take some time.
  • After resetting the PRAM/NVRAM, check if the touchpad is working properly on your MacBook. By now, the problem should be resolved and you must be able to use your Mac’s touchpad with ease.
