File Permission Error Word Mac

On your Mac computer, when you try to save or access your MS Word document, you may encounter a File Permission error word Mac. It may be caused due to Apple’s sandboxing rules. Sandboxing prevents viruses or any other malicious programs from affecting your operating system files.

Method 1: Disable the fonts other than exclusive fonts

To remove or disable all the third-party fonts on your Mac computer, follow the steps given below.

  • On your computer, if you are using Font Management applications, then launch it and try to clear the Font Caches.
  • Else, try to uninstall the external font management from the FontBook utility which is specially developed for Apple’s security system.
  • Launch the Finder application on your Mac.
  • Select the Applications option from the left side of the display.
  • Locate and double-click the Font Book icon.
  • Now, select the All Fonts option on the left-hand side of the window.
  • From the list of fonts, select a font.
  • Press the Command and A keys together to select all the fonts from the list.
  • Then choose the Edit menu and click the Look for Enabled Duplicates from the drop-down list.
  • This will open the Duplicate Fonts Found pop-up if there are any duplicate fonts on your Mac computer.
  • Click on the Resolve Manually button on the pop-up. The next display will list you all the duplicated fonts on your Mac.
  • On that, set the header to All and move to Warnings and Errors.
  • Click and open the duplicated fonts, and select the ‘Remove checked’ option for the old version of the duplicated font.
  • Click the File menu and select Validate Fonts option.
  • Change the header from All to Warnings and Errors. Still, if there are any duplicate fonts, select the old duplicated file again and select ‘Remove Checked.’
  • Close the Font Book application and try to access the word document for which you faced the file permission error word Mac.

Method 2: Reset the Folder Permission

If you have tried removing the duplicate and third-party font management applications from your Mac and the file permission error is still not solved, then the next option would be to reset the folder permission on your Mac computer. Follow the below steps to reset the folder permission.

  • On your Mac computer, click on the Apple icon at the top left-hand side.
  • Choose the Restart option from the available options.
  • To enter the recovery mode on your Mac, press and hold the Command and R keys.
  • When you enter the Recovery Mode, select the ‘Utilities’ menu and click on the Terminal option.
  • When the Terminal window opens on your Mac, type the ‘resetpassword’ command and press the Enter key.
  • In the reset password window that is displayed next, scroll down to Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs and click the Reset button on the right-hand side.
  • Enter the password, and your Mac computer will restart.
  • When the Mac computer is back, try accessing the word document.

Method 3: Clearing the Font Caches

In some cases, where the users faced file permission error for Word on their Mac, the issue has been resolved after clearing the font caches. The steps to clear the font cache on your Mac computer are as follows.

  • Open the Force Quit Application, and you need to close all the applications on your Mac.
  • To open the Force Quit Application, press the Command, Option, and Escape keys simultaneously.
  • On the Force Quit Application, click on all the open applications and then click Force Quit. Make sure you have closed all the applications that are using font caches.
  • After closing all the applications, open the Terminal on your Mac computer.
  • To open the Terminal, press the Command, Shift, and U keys. This will open the Utility folder.
  • From the utility folder, click on the Terminal icon and open it.
  • Then, on the Terminal, type the command given below.
  • sudo atsutil databases -remove
  • After typing the command, press the enter key. Enter the password when prompted.
  • Press the enter key. Once the process is complete, type exit in the Terminal and then press the enter key.
  • Close the Terminal and reboot your Mac computer.
  • Once the Mac computer is restarted, check whether the file permission error word mac issue has been resolved.
